The On Cloudflyer Waterproof running shoe represents the waterproof variant of the On Cloudflyer. Similar to the original model, the Cloudflyer Waterproof also has the typical “Clouds” cushioning for the manufacturer On. One promises one 100% wind and waterproof membrane and powerful protection against impact. But does the On Cloudflyer Waterproof keep what it promises?
Data and facts | On Cloudflyer Waterproof running shoe
This model falls under the category of Cushioning and neutral shoes, as there is no active work against a misalignment of the foot. Due to the wide sole, which I will talk about later, the shoe can also help against overpronation. The OOn Cloudflyer Waterproof running shoe has a Drop of 7mm. That means the heel 7 mm stands higher than the forefoot.
This value is rather low for a cushioned shoe, but allows a more natural running style and is not a disadvantage, as the sole itself is thick enough. The shoe weighs in the men's sample size 292gwhich is not necessarily much for a model with this cushioning and waterproof properties. The weight is still noticeable when trying to run a little faster. These shoes are not suitable for speed runs.
I feel more limited here than that the Cloudflyer would be of any help. The thick sole interferes with walking over the forefoot and does not offer enough flexibility. For intervals and other fast units, I urgently recommend another model. But the Cloudflyer Waterproof is a good decision in many other areas.
Areas of application are diverse
Many areas of application make the On Cloudflyer Waterproof running shoe one true all-rounder. Because this shoe is not only suitable for running. Waterproof shoes are helpful in many activities. The simple black design also makes this model an inconspicuous companion.
I like to use the On Cloudflyer Waterproof:
- For a walk in the woods
- For hiking
- During walks on the beach
- Go to mountain bike
- In the garden
- Or just in everyday life
The only downside I encountered in these activities were stones in the sole. Due to the distinctive shape of the damping, stones from trails tend to get stuck between the "clouds".
The predestined area of application for this model is clearly the road. The cushioning works great on asphalt. During leisurely training runs, the Cloudflyer Waterproof has often brought me comfortably to my destination - preferably in rainy weather.
Security at night
With the On Cloudflyer Waterproof running shoes you are well equipped even at night. The shoes themselves are black like the night, but some reflective elements make the shoe really noticeable. There are reflective On logos in the heel area and on the forefoot. The laces are particularly noticeable when exposed to light. These are provided with reflective strips throughout. This ensures extra security in the dark.
Comfortable cushioning through typical clouds
The cushioning is the helium superfoam from On, which is processed in the sole in the clouds that are common for On. The twelve clouds cushion every step pleasantly and elegantly. Heel first runners enjoy complete comfort. But metatarsals can also look forward to a generous portion of cushioning.
I particularly liked the wide shape of the cushioning. This property offers the runner a excellent stability due to the increased contact area with the floor and also helps against overpronation. Useful on uneven surfaces such as cobblestones. As with the original Cloudflyer, the waterproof version also has a speed board integrated into the sole, which is also responsible for stability.
This is a thin plastic plate. The disadvantage of this installation is the loss of some dynamics in the rolling behavior.
The entire sole also offers a good grip on wet roads.
After a short period of getting used to it, wearing comfort is excellent
When I got into the shoe for the first time, I wasn't really excited. The upper material was not supple and rather hurt, especially in the ankle area. The wide sole with the powerful cushioning seemed stiff and not flexible. Now I am glad that I did not immediately discard the Cloudflyer Waterproof. Even after the first run, I felt a significant improvement in wearing comfort.
Another long walk showed me that the shoe needs some time to get used to. The fluffy tongue keeps the foot comfortably and securely in the shoe. In the meantime I find the Cloudflyer Waterproof due to the thick and wide sole, as well as the generous upper material as most comfortable shoe in my closet.
Even heavy runners can use this shoe with a clear conscience. The damping described above Protects joints and rolls gently.
Pleasant running fun even on long runs
The comfort features just listed and the cushioning explained above particularly suited me on runs up to 30 km. The protection of the joints was extremely comfortable towards the end of the long stretches.
The On Cloudflyer Waterproof running shoe is great for:
- road races
- training runs
- 10km runs
- half marathons
- Long runs
- Runs in rainy weather
- regeneration runs
For running competitions I would always tend to use different shoes, especially if you are running a bit against time.

Conclusion: On Cloudflyer Waterproof running shoe
Not cheap, but worth the price!
If you don't care about wet feet or if you only run when the weather is nice, you can use the normal On Cloudflyer without a guilty conscience. The wind- and waterproof membrane makes the upper material a little less supple and breathable, which is particularly noticeable when running without rain. The shoes are then unnecessarily bulky and warm.
As an addition to your running shoe collection, the On Cloudflyer Waterproof running shoe is one great solution for miserable weather. Walking through the rain with your shoe is really fun. And the versatile uses that are listed above also make the shoe a true all-rounder. The On Cloudflyer Waterproof has become an indispensable part of my shoe cabinet. A shoe for everyone who uses the cold, wet and dark as an excuse not to go running.
The list price of 190 € is above average for running shoes without carbon. But those who are willing to pay this price can expect that too above average quality. I've been using the shoe intensively for a few months and still haven't noticed any abnormal wear on the material. Quality has its price.
